It's ridiculous! Why are adults acting irrationally - without objectivity - and mistreating the poor student? I'm not impressed with how this matter was handled.

@Lowell Alumna, you sound like a typical Lowell graduate: always afraid to speak out, watching out only for yourself, but always having an opinion when you can hide behind a screen name. If you are really concerned, come out. I hate "Lowell mentality." Don't help only when it's convenient for you.

Actually, students are marked absent during AP testing because the student is not actually in class. However, it is an excused absent, so no harm is done. According to board policies, students cannot be penalized and can make up work if the absence is excused.

@Anthony: I'm not meaning to accuse the family of deliberately cutting short the video to only show one side at all. I'm merely saying that all the videos are cut, so people who weren't there and don't know where to look wouldn't be able to see/hear the whole story.

Who said anything about having a discussion during the meeting? I'm perfectly aware that discussion isn't allowed during these sessions.

All I'm doing is trying to clarify for myself some things that the family is trying to say/claim so I can better understand where they're coming from. I would have hoped it'd be sufficient to come straight to their site to get some sort of response to that effect, but that doesn't seem to work.

I don't think it would do any good for me to get up in front of the Board, say these things, and probably end up adding more to the family's problems. It looks as if they have enough on their plates as it is.

@SF Resident: You see, I wouldn't have known that because that part isn't exactly shown here. Would it not benefit the family to show how hostile the Board and audience act toward them and give a solid example of how they're being wronged?

I was there at the meeting. You would not believe how hostile the board members and audience act toward the family. I commend them for being so brave and steadfast. I wish more people would realize and acknowledge the problems they are facing. It's too bad people are so worried about self preservation, that they are willing to sacrifice a child's future.

You can view the full videos on the San Francisco Unified School District Board of Education website. They are not cut down to show only one side. The section they are speaking in is called General Concerns. Discussion is not allowed. I feel people who are so passionate when they can hide behind the world wide web, should get up and attend the meetings. You can be better heard and taken more seriously.

Hrm. Both Epic & Myth and Comedy & Satire are 40-minute long courses, not 45 minutes to an hour.

Also, there's again the issue of not being guaranteed the courses the students want, only the courses they need. Even if the program sheet had Epic & Myth on it, it's the school's prerogative to shuffle kids around to balance classes. It has been done for years. :\

I understand how frustrating it is to sit through a class you didn't pick or didn't want, but many Lowell students have to do that at one point or another, and it's good to prepare you for college, anyway, since there will undoubtedly be requirements that you don't want to take.

I wish these videos weren't all cut short to only show one side of things, though. It'd be interesting to be able to hear/see both and figure out what each group involved is thinking. It's rather hard to do that without the other side.

A falsified course request isn't good, I agree there. However, self-scheduling is a privilege and not a right. We as students are never guaranteed the courses we want, or the teachers we want. The only thing we're guaranteed are the requirements to graduate (and basically, you're only guaranteed to finish those by the time you're a second semester senior). Therefore, considering everything else that you've said is going on, I really don't think this is such a huge issue -- having one English class over another isn't the end of the world. :\

I have a question. I'm not saying this is or isn't the case, but is it really so implausible for a student to fail one or two classes, but excel in the others? Because I've definitely seen it happen before.

I agree that something should have been done about the bullying and about the bad grades. However, you also have to keep in mind that Lowell kids are also expected to go to their counselor if they need something. Each counselor has hundreds of kids to look after, and have to help the juniors/seniors with college stuff on top of that. I'm not saying the lack of counseling is excusable, but when I was at the school, students around me weren't generally just called into the counseling department -- they went to make appointments with the counselors themselves.
